Mendoza

  • Mendoza is located by the Andes, 1,042 km from Buenos Aires and 400 km from Santiago de Chile. (see map)
  • Mendoza is a beautiful city with streets surrounded by thick trees, wide sidewalks, wooded parks and open irrigation channels (see pictures). An industrial ring has developed around the residential area, including the cities of Guaymallen, Godoy Cruz, Las Heras, Maipu and Lujan de Cuyo.
  • Mendoza is one of the most important vine-growing areas in the world. Some wineries include hotels, restaurants and offer visits and wine-tasting tours.
  • Mendoza offers almost all outdoor activities, such as climbing, hiking, ski, trekking and rafting. (see Tours)

    Mendoza Hotels

  • Mendoza hotels and apart hotels are mainly located in the downtown area. The local offering includes all categories and prices are low compared to other destinations in Argentina.
  • Accommodations outside Mendoza include cottages and thermal resorts located in secluded areas of the Andes. There are winter resorts in Vallecitos, Uspallata and Potrerillos with hotels that remain open year round.
  • Las Lenas and Los Penitentes ski centers also have hotels and apart hotels with excellent infrastructure. For tourists with lower budgets, there are cabins at affordable prices.
  • Mendoza accommodations also include ranches (estancias) which provide rural experience and activities framed by the magnificent Andes.

    Mendoza Tours

  • Mendoza tours are oriented to sightseeing, wine-tasting and outdoors. A new urban project was designed after an earthquake destroyed the city in 1861. Independencia square became the new core of the city (Sarmiento walkway starts here) and several open areas, museums and churches were developed. The Nuestra Señora de Loreto baroque cathedral is an icon of this era. (see pictures)
  • The O'Higgins Park holds the Municipal Aquarium, the San Francisco ruins and the Foundational Area Museum (with remains of the old city devastated by the earthquake).
  • The San Martin Park is a must-see attraction, due to its large extension of forest and gardens, its artificial lake, the Cerro de la Gloria viewpoint, the Zoo and the Romero Day Auditorium, venue of the Fiesta de la Vendimia.
  • Greater Mendoza tours include the popular Good Wine Road which crosses the vine-growing regions of Godoy Cruz, Guaymallén, Luján de Cuyo and Maipú. It is the ideal tour to visit state-of-the-art wineries as well as family-owned facilities (see customer reviews)
  • Mendoza´s main thermal areas are located in Challao (5 km north) and Cacheuta (38 km south-west). Thermal centers offer full services and modern facilities. Potrerillos (100 km) and Uspallata (50 km) are favorite spots for sport fishing, horseback riding, adventure tourism and trekking.
  • Vallecitos is Mendoza´s nearest ski center (78 km) offering 7 lifts and basic infrastructure for beginners. Los Penitentes is located 176 km away but offers slopes with different levels of difficulty. It is also an important meeting place for hikers, arriving every summer from all over the world to climb Aconcagua.
  • Las Lenas is Argentina´s top ski centers in terms of infrastructure, area and quality of snow. It is located in Malargüe, 450 km south of Mendoza, and offers a slalom stadium, 27 tracks and 13 lifts.

    Mendoza Car Rental and Transfers

  • Mendoza car rental companies are located in the downtown area or at the airport. Transfers are available from downtown to nearby attractions on regular and private service.
  • Mendoza International Airport is located in El Plumerillo, 9 km away. From here you can get daily flights to Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, Río de Janeiro (Brazil), Buenos Aires and main cities in Argentina.
  • Malargüe and San Rafael have domestic airports operating flights from Buenos Aires and other cities in the ski season. From there, you can get transfers to Las Lenas or Mendoza.

    Mendoza Tourist Information

  • Mendoza tourist information center is located on Av. San Martín 1143. A Mendoza information office is also available in Buenos Aires, on Callao 445.
  • The best time to visit Mendoza is between April and November, especially during fall and spring. In summer, it is hot during the day and chilly at night. In winter, the minimum temperature is 3º C in the city.
  • Tourists wishing to climb Mt. Aconcagua must request prior permission with their passports. Minors between 14 and 21 years old must have authorization from parents or legal guardians. The best time for climbing is January and February. A highly-trained park ranger team provides information and controls climbers.
