Iguazu Falls Travel Information

Iguazu Falls, Puerto Iguazu and Foz do Iguazu

  • Iguazu Falls includes the cities of Puerto Iguazu in Argentina, Foz do Iguazu in Brazil and the Iguazu Falls National Park shared by both countries (see Iguazu Falls map). The beauty of its natural environment makes this area one of the top destinations in Latin America (see Iguazu Falls pictures). The Iguazu Falls National Park hosts the Falls and covers the north of the province of Misiones, Argentina and the southwest of the state of Paraná, Brazil.
  • Puerto Iguazu is the gateway to the Argentine Falls. The small city has a population of 30,000 and a quiet atmosphere although it receives about 350,000 tourists every year. The city itself is not a tourist attraction, except for Hito Tres Fronteras (Three Borders Milestone) which offers a panoramic view of the three countries: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay (see Iguazu Falls pictures).
  • Puerto Iguazu Hotels are situated in the downtown area or near the Hito (see Iguazu Falls map). There are also hotels outside town, on the highway to the Falls. Both locations require transportation to the Park´s gate
  • Foz do Iguazu is the tourist and commercial center of Southern Brazil. With a population of 190,000, it offers attractions beyond the the Iguazu Falls National Park and the Itaipu Dam. They include restaurants, discos and shows of Afro-Brazilian culture
  • Foz do Iguazu Hotels are also in the downtown area or along the highway to the Falls. Either location demands transportation to the Falls

Iguazu Hotels, Hostels & Accommodations: Puerto Iguazu & Foz do Iguazu

  • Iguazu Hotels concentrate heavily in Foz do Iguazu, especially three star and above. Hostels, Lodges and less luxurious hotels are more available in Puerto Iguazu. The lodging infrastructure of the area is complete, from simple accommodations and inns to international five star hotels
  • Lodging prices are similar in both countries, and good bargains can be found on either side. A good option is to stay in one of the two hotels at the Iguazu Falls: Sheraton Iguazu in Argentina or Tropical das Cataratas in Brazil.
  • Iguazu Hotels are rated differently depending on the country, so check services and facilities before booking accommodations

Iguazu Falls Tours & Attractions: Puerto Iguazu & Foz do Iguazu

  • The Iguazu Falls National Park comprises 240,000 hectares shared by Argentina and Brazil. It hosts more than 4,000 species, which are difficult to find elsewhere, an enormous variety of birds, mammals and fishes (see Iguazu Falls pictures)
  • There is an extensive offer of tours in both countries, and the possibilities are many: boat rides to the base of Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat)-the most impressive fall, which is 70 meters high (229.65 feet)-, rides on foot across the rainforest, goldfishing, and photographic safaris. Attractive night shows and the Iguazu Casino are also worth a visit.
  • Itaipu Dam, San Ignacio Ruins, Bird´s Park and Wanda Mines are the main attractions outside the Falls (see Iguazu Falls tours)

Iguazu Falls Car Rental, Airport Transfers & Transportation

  • Car rental in Iguazu Falls is offered by most international operators and a few locals in Puerto Iguazu and Foz do Iguazu. Renting a car is not worth if you plan to drive within the area because the public transportation system is safe, cheap and reliable. Tourists staying at Puerto Iguazu often use public transportation to get to the Falls.
  • Airport Transfers and taxis are commonly used to get from any of the two airports to the hotels in Iguazu Falls or the cities. They are reliable and safe, provided that the services are contracted with established providers
  • The access point are the international airports of Puerto Iguazu and Foz do Iguazu (see Iguazu Falls map) Tourists arrive on either airport and from the base city take the tours to both sides of the falls
  • Both cities have plane and bus connections with other cities in both countries, as well as direct flights to Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Cordoba. Public transportation connects daily Puerto Iguazu, Foz do Iguazu and the Falls.

    Tourist Information on Iguazu Falls

  • Summer temperatures are very high, so the best time to visit is between August and November. There is a special section on visiting the Iguazu Falls with tips and a comprehensive description of the trails within the Park
  • The Tourist Offices of both cities provide information about prices, tours, hotels and attractions. It is not very comprehensive but there are plenty of written material and maps in Spanish, Portuguese and English. On both sides of the Iguazu Falls National Park there are parlors with bilingual guides and written material.
